ubuntu logoOne thing that I like open source with a big community. The update pace is fast. Every 6 month its a gonna be a new version of Ubuntu. Now, the alpha version for Ubuntu 10.10 code named Maverick Meerkat is already phased out for the early birds to test it.

The third alpha brings a lot of new changes/features. Here are some:

Linux Kernel 2.6.35

Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 3 uses the Linux Kernel 2.6.35. This kernel includes a lot of security enhancements over the previous kernels. It also has some interesting new features like support for Apple’s Magic Mouse and faster packet transmission.

Ubuntu Software Center

The Ubuntu Software Center has undergone some changes. The main page now shows “Featured” applications and also has a “Whats New” section. It also supports plugins now.

Ubuntu Netbook Edition

The Ubuntu Netbook Edition now uses the Unity interface by default. Global menu also makes an appearance. Recently just got some time to install Ubuntu netbook edition on my netbook and I’m kinda impress with the compact desktop. The menu is well organized. Really suits the small screen nicely. Hope there’s more coming out from netbook edition.

Kubuntu

In Kubuntu, KDE SC 4.5 RC is used for this release. As expected, the default browser has also been changed to rekonq.

Download/Upgrade

If you want to try it out here is the download link: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/maverick/alpha-3/

If you would like to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 directly (not recommended!), open the terminal, execute the command below and follow the on-screen instructions.

For complete list of new changes in this Alpha 3 you can check Ubuntu 10.10 official blueprints page.

The final release is scheduled for 10th October 2010.

Been hearing about it for quite sometime but I decided to wait for the final release. Although I like using it I don’t think I am daring enough to have an alpha version of an OS screw up on my laptop since I only have one and can’t afford any major damages to any part of it nowadays, even if the laptop is quite old >_<

A’ight, had an ordered copy straight from Canonical. Well… I’m not that much into bleeding-edge tech, but the base Linux kernel… lacked some features though. One of them is the support for multi-touch touchpads on some certain laptop models.

Guess I’ll just wait for the next LTS release, hurr durr
