Network survey for all UTM Skudai College

advertisement.gif

Faculty of Electrical (FKE) is undergoing a survey for UTM Skudai students. The purpose of this survey is to determine the actual speed experienced by the students from their respective colleges through WIRED and WiFiUTM network and eventually to take the necessary actions to improve the connection speed to an acceptable speed rate.

The number of Access Points (AP) installed with the total of around 890 APs:

Don’t let total AP’s installed fools you. With so many APs lying around in UTM yet student still having a problem accessing a WifiUTM smoothly. One thing that you should know, there’s a limit number of users can connect to each AP simultaneously.

They also in a midst of upgrading a wired network in all college in UTM. That’s definitely a good news cause wired connection is much stable compare to wireless.

Another thing we as UTM student should be aware of, if anyone of us using a router in our room it can kinda mess up the wireless network. Just read the explanation from FKE staff below.

One of the problems we are facing in providing a good WiFiUTM coverage is the disturbance from Rogue AP (the APs that are installed by the students without our consent) as shown in the picture below (in K15). The conflicting channels used by those APs will result in reduction of the speed to the AP and to the network itself.

Rogue APs in K15 are listed below (we are going to trace them as we have captured their location and MAC addresses). There are many more in other colleges.

Until the problems related to these rogue AP are solved, we are going to experience slowness in the access speed (it is a kind of chicken and egg problem-students say WiFiUTM is slow and we say your rogue APs are disturbing our APs because they (without realizing it) are using the same channels that WiFiUTM’s APs do).

The test was conducted in college 15! I’m staying in college 14 btw. And I can see couple of wireless SSID that I familiar. Gotcha! :-p

Word of advice, please turn of your wireless router when you are not in use. That goes to Alan, Rasyidi, Bhem and Izzudin :-)

YES, the new so called 4G prepaid broadband [Review in UTM Skudai]

There’s new broadband provider in town. This broadband is relatively new and not many places in the coverage yet. So far, UTM has been chosen the first IPTA to enjoy 4G speed. Each student has been granted free 300Mb each month. Yep, it’s only 300Mb, if you’re thinking you gonna leech the network with heavy downloading just be prepare your wallet to be thick as ever. Cause this is a prepaid broadband.

Right now, YES has covered Johor, Penang and Klang Valley. So, few of my friends already bought the modem at Lot 10 in KL. Priced at RM99. Yes you gonna need this modem to access the network. You can’t use a normal 3G modem.

Once you bought the modem you are entitled another 300Mb free for the next 10 month. The 300Mb will be credited to your account respectively each month. So for fellow UTM student they gonna enjoy 600Mb worth of bandwidth each month for free. That sounds reasonable for your google needs right?

Here’s how the modem looks like. Pictures courtesy of my roommate. Thanks Nizam :-)

I borrowed the modem for a while and do some quick speedtest. Here are the results,

Local server speedtest shows some tremendous result. Reasonable ping times and the upload speed really caught my attention.

After that to make the test neutral I do a couple test on the overseas server. The ping took much longer as expected but the download speed remains stable.

Overall its still a new network with low amount of subscribers. From my point of view Yes should offer a better speed as this is a 4G network. They are utilizing a very small percentage of what 4G network is capable of.

However, who can predict years to come, is Yes gonna be reliable and stay on top and fight for the best broadband spot? Let’s see.
