Celcom Broadband Review

advertisement.gif

celcom-broadband-logo-small.jpgWell this is the 5th day I’ve been using Celcom Broadband. So far so good. Though it would be a good idea to make some review about it.

I’ve registered with Celcom on monday at Celcom Tower. The registration process is quite simple and surprisingly I can get connected in the night of the registration day. Quite fast eh?

I go for D68 package and the monthly charged is RM68. Speed for D68 package is capped at 384kbps. It’s good enough for normal surf. If you want a better speed you can opt for D98 package though, RM98 monthly. D98 will enjoy speed up to 3.6mbps. :hehe:

I’m using Sierra Wireless Aircard 875U to get connected. You can get this usb modem around RM700-900. Try find it on lelong.com.my or lowyat.

This is how it looks when its been attached to my Dell Vostro.

About downloading speed, can’t say much about it. But here’s one tip you should follow, try to download everything using Flashget and Flashgot (Firefox add-on) or any download manager to get the highest speed possible.

Mostly you can get download speed around 15-35kb when downloading from international server.

I’m taking this screenshot while downloading Adobe Photoshop update using Flashget from Adobe server.

flashget-screenshot-for-celcom-broadband-review.jpg

Here’s another couple speed test from local server.

Measure the download speed using Speedtest.net For your information this test has been taken from Seksyen 7, Shah Alam. I’m at my brother house. I’ll try and put the result from Setapak when I get back to hostel. :-)

This is the result from Cyberjaya server

and this is from Kuala Lumpur server

I didn’t put Torrent download speed though. Cause its always fluctuate and it depends 100% on peers location. If you can get connected to local peers your download speed should be okay and if you not, the speed would be linger around 1-3kb. :-p

Cons
rapidshare_celcom.jpg

Because all Celcom Broadband users were sharing certain IP, chances to download something from Rapidshare is kind of hard. But I’ve heard the speed are bad anyway. So don’t bother. Search for other alternative or get a premium account instead. :-)

That’s all for now. I’ll keep this post updated when new speed test available from other location.

man, are you sure it was entirely DC or just connection freeze?

If it was connection freeze it is normal for a wireless connection. Happens to myself before. Celcom broadband will freeze when I surf until 5mb or so.

    Quite disappointing right? :-p

i think this is not about the freeze situation…..maybe yes or not….my condition is when i connected through my vodafone modem about 5~10 minute (approximate received data packet around 2000 byte) the connection will hang. It will display “page cannot be displayed” . If this happen i restart my machine and connected it again…sometime it need me to restart my machine lot of time only to get connected for 5~10 minute. 1 restart 5 minute, 2 restart = another 5 minute…..so if u want to connect for 30 minute u need to restart about 6 times…….. :-(

Sounds a connection freeze to me. :-)

Ok nvm, are you using Vista? I remember someone had similar problem with yours that using Vista.

Here’s another suggestion, while you successfully connected try running some torrent, this will make your connection active and prevent it from idle.

This method works for me. If this failed, I’m not sure what’s going on.

Just to ask a sily question, any body ever see any advertising for Vodafone E220? The packaging of the Vodafone E220 have any address or phone number for the local distributer? The modem have any SIRIM sticker? Does it comply to our local Telco specification and standard? Don’t just save a little and have more troubles, be original! Thanks!

I’ve read many postings not favouring Maxis. Yes, they are cheap, but sometimes the price also makes you wonder why. Their only competitor in this game is celcom.

I am using celcom for over a year and happy with it. Last year was using the PCMCIA modem, but my overheated wireless router screwed up the thing, so I have to get the E220 usb modem. It works swell :-)

I talked to the customer service and to my surprise, they told me that every account is being “throtled”. i.e. Each account download limit per month is 5GB, basically the data transfer quota. So better set your browser to cache or use a proxy that cache data. Anyway, what I dont like is the next statement from the customer service when I asked what happen if I overlimit my download quota, the answer is “celcom will reduce your speed down to 218Kps”… Althought I am satisfied with celcom’s service, but I think this is not fair as I dont sign anything that state I’ve accepted their quota system.

Another thing. I always pay my bill every 2 months (save petrol or whatever, no interest, so why hurry right?).. The second month, the speed is always slower, I think they drop the speed as well when you have outstanding balance. This sort of “penalty” or “punishment” is also not in the terms and condition.

I am using since one week celcom 98rm plan that promises 3.5 mbps but I am getting 1.4 mbps that is good enough, but after 10. 00 pm speed go down 100 to 200.kbps as well as network disconnect, that is not good for using voice over internet applications.
I hope celcome technical expert’s conceder that matter and try to stable the network speed minimum 1.00 mbps. for 98rm plan.

    hopeful with all of you!

I’m using celcom broadband for 3 months now. There was no problem with the network except long time for downloading. Since 14 September 2008, I’ve got problem when I failed to connect. After Authenticating, it will state disconnected and not connected as usual. Until now, my celcom broadband still cannot connect with the internet. Is it because the line is busy or else?

Yes, I did. They will check with their technical department. My account is okay. They said maybe the line is busy because festival season.

How long has it been stay that way? Well its true the line been kinda busy lately, but i still manage to get connected with 5 tries at least. Now I’m back to my hometown Penang. The connection is superb.

    Where you staying?

Couple things that you can do on your part is, maybe try uninstall the modem driver and do some local troubleshoot. :-)

hi. i live in ipoh. the max speed i got by using this celcom broadband is around 2mb.but that was when i in my office nearer to ipoh city. my house is about 13 km from city centre and the max speed i ever got was around 1mb. normaly the speed is around 300-600kb. now even worst below 200 kb. agreed with the others that the service suck. nak tengok youtube pun tak boleh. i think the gov should abolish the monopoly enjoyed by tm, celcom and maxis. gov should give also give digi 3G license. after that baru celcom tahu langit itu tinggi atau rendah. he.. hee..

last raya i went balik kampung to kk, my dad is using celcom d68. i got umts connection but its ok since the max speed is 384kbps anyway. the speed was mostly 128 kbps, but its ok since i dont browse heavily. sometimes i got hsdpa connection for a while.
so i subsrcribed d68 for my own use, with the celcom usb modem, and went back to kl, pantai hillpark.
i did get hsdpa connection, but the problem is, every now and then it will change to umts, and change back to hsdpa, when this thing happens, i got 0 download speed. i’m not getting anywhere with this kind of situation. i’m now very frustrated. thinking to buy a 3g hp as a modem, since it will stay in umts all the time…

I’m using myr68 monthly package with my sonyericsson c702 as modem. The advantage is I can browse internet whenever I’m via my phone. I can independantly use google maps, opera mini, watch utube and download themes etc to my phone. The speed is wellsaid…good. When the phone connected to my laptop, it will auto switch to phone mode which one of the fuctions is as modem (other than remote control ect, cool). The fastest speedtest I get around 222kbps. Fastest donwload I experienced was 56kpbs, one 76kpbs then slightly drop to 30kbps to 12kbps holyshit then to 8kbps. AND

I can play Ragnarok Online with it with no problem, super smooth. Torrent??? It’s runing, I already downloaded some movies already, and am downloading more now. Sorry celcom.

But Im planning to buy that huawei hsdpa usb modem (which offered by celcom, maxis and vodafone). The unlocked maxis and celcom ones are cheaper around myr320-350, the same model comes from celcom cost myr500. Duh is it worthy?

makubex, sounds like you are a heavy user. By all means, I strongly suggest getting a usb modem instead using your phone to online.

    Worth every penny. :-)

Phone is not meant for independent browsing cause you might burn up the 3g chip. That’s what happen to most users.

Windows Vista has been quite known for his troublesome in 3g connection.

Regarding the earth icon, its normal for all 3g connection. Mine also always like that. :-p Just leave it for few minutes or reconnect it.

Yet, there is no official news for Digi 3g. But rumors has mingle around that they will launch it next year.
