I just hate to use the synaptic package installer embedded in ubuntu system. That because internet connection here in Malaysia just sucks. I prefer to have a local copy of installer resides in my external hard drive. It’ easy for me if I feel I’d like to format my computer now and then, I don’t have to download all my software and drivers all over again.
Just sharing some link here. Nifty player that could play almost all codecs that you could throw at it.

yeah..
internet in malaysia sucks..
btw,thnks for the info..
i dont know that vlc have offline installer..
how about getting offline repos dvd?
Hello makubex,
are you searching for offline repos dvd tutorial or you would like to suggest to me one?
Well I been thinking to do that too. But right now I’m too lazy to playing around with that after spending countless hour on vLite to mod my Vista installation.
I’ll be much happier with a original ISO installation.
suggestion, but I would prefer to use online repos through package mangger. Using f*cking celcom bb I can even get up to 100kbps on update from right server. why spend time tweaking vista? better use that time to try other distros on ur rig.
Haha yeah your right. Don’t ever dreaming to update through package manager when using celcom without leaving it overnite. I’ve been there
.
Nah tweaking Vista was some time ago. That just me trying to play around with vlite. After Win7 out all my hardwork is for nothing
Currently enjoying a steady Win7 OS
but ubuntu update not necessarily significnt, somtimes it can make ur sytem worse too, leaving distributed setting, then utilise package manager just to get proprietary softwares n codecs, extra themes, fonts and softwares, then disable the update. It won’t b any issue on ur system after that if u dont commit further updates though.
And u were wrong, I meant 100kbps download is suprisingly decent for cecom bb, sometimes Im able to update ubuntu as fast as 5 to 10 minutes.
And my internet is more rsponsive on ubuntu than on 7. I dual boot ubuntu and 7 on dell inspiron. I gotta use 7 bcause I have no skill on inkscape and thegimp, still gotta stick on Ps n Ai.
but yeah, microsoft still rulez here in Malaysia, so to live with the masses, we still need to have a windows.
100kbps is good? I can get much better on Wimax
. Seldom lah…
Yep thanks for the heads up. I’ve once update the kernel and my boot loader messed up! That’s rough.
I’ve tried installing virtualbox just for the sake trying to keep up with windows software. The lags and no usb support just made me kept away from it.
So there’s no more dual boot option for me right now. At least not until I get a 64 bit machine to run the virtual box in fullscreen mode. That should be awesome.
I don’t know about others, but I’m pretty much happier letting my Ubuntu portable box run at home rather than in college, even if I’m using a local server to update.
… Talking about local servers, here’s a tip: Try changing your Software Sources to a Malaysian mirror. They work wonders IMO. I’m using the Malaysian Open Source Community Center (http://mirrors.oscc.org.my/ubuntu) as a mirror and I can say goodbye to problems updating now
MMU and UPM students are lucky because they have their own mirror, so updates won’t be a sweat
Thanks Honoo. That sounds good. But the link you gave is down atm. Will try it later
That’s a mirror link and of course it’s down for me as well, you should look for it in the “Software Sources” lists and select it from there. It’s there in the “Software Sources” server selections, look through it.
